AP Economics Teacher
What I Would Have Done Differently
If I were in college right now, I am not sure that I would pursue a degree in Economics. This is not because I don’t enjoy their subject, but because there are so many new fields of study! Now there are several majors that weren’t offered when I was in school like: Computer Information Systems, Supply Chain, Data Analytics, Digital Marketing, and so much more!
If I were to go back, I personally would have double majored in Supply Chain and Computer Information Systems. I chose these majors for 2 major reasons:
- Everything is digital now. If you don’t have technical skills, you will have a hard time in the job market.
- Supply Chain is one of the most in demand majors at the moment. Because of globalization, many companies need professionals to help them plan logistics and every step of their pipeline.
Both of these majors also relate to economics, because in tandem they relate to global analysis and researching foreign nations and the best way to conduct business there. Of course, I am not saying that this is what every future business student should do! You should choose your major based off of your interests, talents, and aspirations. One thing I always tell me students is to never chase money. If your only goal is to make money, you will never be satisfied with yourself and your achievements, because there will always be more money to be made. Take it from me! I am a teacher earning a teacher salary when I easily could have gone corporate or worked for the government and earned significantly more. To this day, I do not regret my decision and I am happy I choose happiness and fulfillment over financial success.
